Here you can see the flower buds on an olive tree starting to appear. They will open and flower in May so we will be looking to have stable weather during this period and not the hailstorms we had one year which severely damaged the crop as the hail shredded the flowers. Olive trees are self-pollinating so do not need agents such as bees or wind although these can help the process.
At this time of year along the banks and hedgerows you get a brilliant splash of colour from the poppies against the olive drab backdrop of the groves themselves.
This blog is called 'Life on an Italian olive grove' and talks about my work in the grove and in Italy
